Questions
About tax services
Florida has no personal state income tax, which is a genuine advantage for owners taking profit through a pass-through entity. It does not mean no state tax obligations: corporations may owe Florida corporate income tax, and most businesses selling goods or certain services owe sales tax, which has both a state rate and a county surtax.
Florida's state sales tax rate is 6%, and most counties add a discretionary sales surtax on top — the rates in Orange, Duval and Miami-Dade counties all differ. Which county's surtax applies depends on where the sale is sourced, not where your office is. There is also a cap that limits the surtax on a single sale of tangible personal property, but that cap does not apply to every category — commercial rentals and many services are surtaxed on the full amount. Getting this wrong means undercollecting, and the shortfall comes out of your margin.
It depends almost entirely on your net profit. The election can reduce self-employment tax, but it adds a payroll requirement, a separate 1120-S return, and the obligation to pay yourself a reasonable salary. Below roughly the mid-forties in net profit, the added cost commonly exceeds the saving. Our S-corp calculator shows the break-even for your numbers, including the costs most calculators leave out.
It depends on your entity type and state. Partnerships and S-corps generally file earlier in the year than C-corps and individuals, quarterly estimates fall on their own schedule, sales tax is typically monthly, and Florida's annual report has a hard deadline with a substantial late fee for most for-profit entities. Our deadline generator builds the specific calendar for your entity and state.
Yes. For most owners it is better handled together — your K-1 flows from the business return into your personal return, and having one team see both sides avoids the mismatch that triggers notices.
